Plant Dyes with Natural Fibers
Colors derived from plants and the natural world around us are an age old gift that have brought beauty to cultures across the world. Come and discover for your self the beauty of nature’s palette of color and tone and the joy of bringing your own colors to life.
In this class you will learn how to prepare cotton and silk to receive and hold plant dyes, to prepare a vat of dye and differences between animal/plant derived fibers and how they interact with dye absorption and color.
From this 5 hour class you will come away with two beautiful pieces of hand dyed cloth, a basic understanding of how to prepare 4 plants to make vats of dye and a beginners enthusiasm for experimenting further on your own with a good list of resources.
This workshop will be taught by Erin O’Neill, Growing Homes Founder and Teacher at Santa Fe Waldorf, and a guest teacher from our community: Carmen Harris. Carmen Harris is a Waldorf trained early childhood educator, an experiential nature educator and a lover of crafting with nature’s gifts.
A vegetarian lunch of soup, salad and bread will be provided!
